Is Your Company’s Security a Process or Just a Piece of Software?

When companies talk about cybersecurity, the conversation usually starts with IT.

The IT team manages the infrastructure, applications and systems that need to be protected. It monitors activity, manages access and responds to technical issues.

That makes IT a central part of cybersecurity.
It doesn't make security an IT-only responsibility.

Decisions about employee access, suppliers and new applications carry security implications. IT provides the technical expertise, while managers understand the business need. Considering both before a change is approved helps teams address risks early and clarify who is responsible.

The Practical Side of Cybersecurity

Does security fit to the reality of the business? Security procedures need to be clear and practical enough for people to follow.

People take shortcuts because the usual process makes it harder to get their work done. If an approved application makes a routine task unnecessarily difficult, a team may start using another tool without checking how it handles company information.

Understanding the difficulty gives IT a chance to find a suitable solution and agree on how new applications are assessed.

An employee moves to a different department. They will need access to new systems, but may still have permissions from their previous role. Unless someone reviews those permissions, access can remain long after it is needed.

A supplier’s account can stay active after a project ends. Closing the project should include confirming that access has been removed, with a specific person responsible for that check.

These details give security a practical place in business operations: knowing who approves access, when it should be reviewed and who follows up.

The Role of IT Remains Central

IT needs to understand both the systems the business relies on and how people use them in their daily work. That requires regular input from the teams using them.

Management and employees also have a role in security. Their decisions affect who has access to information, what is shared with external partners and which tools are used.

Having IT and business teams work together, with clear responsibilities and security considered as part of everyday business decisions, builds the foundation for more resilient operations.
